When we consume for the sake of consuming, rather than being smart about how we do it, this is what we end up with:

This stuff never goes “away” – there is no away. It just goes somewhere else to become someone else’s problem for while, before it circles back around and ends up in your water, your soil, or your food. Everything is a circle when you are all living on the same planet. So when you buy products or pay for services, pay for the product that will last a while and for the service that will keep your items in good health. Pay a little extra for a desk made of real wood rather than MDF… an well-made energy-efficient appliance… someone to do the job right the first time. Your wallet, and the planet, will thank you.

Such a great reminder. This is why reusable bags are so great because everyone is doing their part to save the environment.
A great reminder, and oh so true. Or as the Story of Stuff and other sites will tell us, there is a cost to everything, and if something seems cheap on the price tag, the cost is either going to be borne in the future when we dispose of the item and/or by those who had to make it.
Its sad how much trash we put out on the curb. So much of can be recycled if you spend a little time sorting and taking it to a proper facility.
I am beginning to realize this. I also find that buying appliances where they actually help you keep them going is great too. I finally bought a Dyson vacuum because with my 3 kids, 2 cats and 2 dogs I need a vacuum that actually works and is reliable. I had a blockage and the man on the other end of their service line helped me get it cleared. It took maybe 5 minutes and my vacuum was working again and now I look under the bed before shoving the vacuum under there.
I support this post of yours… it’s great that you used photos to prove it true tragedy of reckless consuming…
It does not take much effort, time or resources to preserve the planet, we all have to be active and keep this wonderful world healthy and live…
I am so glad someone had finally posted photos of all the junk we put out there. Thank you Christiana. I sometimes drive my husband crazy commenting or asking for less electronic stuff coming into our place for computors, cellphones, and Ipod. I am proud to say that now our weekly garbage is just two to three tiny little biodegradable garbage bags. If we all make this effort, we will be really contributing.
Hello I have just come across your blog while searching Google and just wanted to express how much I loved reading several of the posts on the site, and will be back to take a look yet again and to remark for myself.
