Last week, I started the 10 Things Challenge, where I declared that I was going to start getting rid of 10 items a week from my house. Many readers are playing along, and some have even taken to listing what 10 Things they have gotten rid of as well. Group efforts are always more motivational! Well, the first week was an assortment of random stuff for me, and this week doesn’t look much different. Here are the 10 items I have found in the house to get rid of and where I am sending each item:
1. Clothes. Am counting all 8 items as one.->Goodwill.
2. Bag of soap shavings, as was going to use. I never did.->Free box.
3. Black leather messenger bag. 1995, are you there? ->Goodwill.
4. Joker character from a cereal box. Huh? ->Goodwill.
5. Old Pentax film camera, not used in at least 9 years.->Not sure yet.
6. 1994 Old Dominion University yearbook. I’m not in it, and never looked at it. ->Recycling
7. A charger of some sort, that goes to something unknown. ->Goodwill.
8. Essential oil burner from The Body Shop. Already have 1, so this one goes. ->Goodwill.
9. Road Atlas from 2000. I used this on my recent cross-country trip, and entire roads were missing from the map. ->Recycling.
10. Metallica VHS tapes. I can let go, I know I can. ->Goodwill.

So, there you have it – 10 more things leaving my house less cluttered. What 10 things are you getting rid of this week?
Geez, you DO have some junk! How long do you think it will take you to unload at 10/wk? lol
I have a Minolta SRT101 I got for high school graduation. I’ve been toying with letting it go since I went digital about five years ago. It takes great pictures still, but I think I hold onto it for sentimental slob value. It’s been across the country a dozen or so times with me. Let me know what you do with yours. 🙂
Well, my husband and I have already decluttered quite a bit, so it’s getting harder and harder to get rid of more stuff.
However, we do keep finding stuff!
Recently, I gave away an old stereo, some vases, and some glass knick knacks (including our wedding cake topper because, really, when are we going to use that again?!). And my husband gave away a computer or two, plus two tote bags of computer parts.
I probably still have a few articles of clothing I could get rid of — at least. Waiting to see what I need/wear this fall, though. And then there’s a lot of jewelry I could part with, but I want to just keep that outside of my regular collection for a while to make sure I don’t miss anything since most of those pieces are rather hard to replace.
Believe me Meg, I look around this house and dont see any of this crap – its in boxes in the closets and garage. I imagine this will start getting difficult real soon!
Nan – My film camera has been sitting in the case for at least 9 years, so even if I give it away, at least someone else might actually use it. In fact, that’s probably what I will do with it.
You have motivated me to tackle this job (again!). I periodically get into a frenzy and start decluttering only to get frustrated and overwhelmed. Last week I threw out two garbage bags of shredded documents that had accumulated as well as at least 15 other things. This week I’ve managed to “let go of” at least 25 things.
You might try selling that film camera on Craigslist. I had a 23 year old Minolta that had been a wedding present. I sold it with all of the accessories (flash, zoom lens, etc.) We live in a college town and I sold it to a student taking a photography class. They were required to begin on a film camera before moving to digital.
Thanks again for the motivation!
1.Single drapery panel – local theatre 2-5.(Ugly) photo boxes – Goodwill 6. Too-high heels – GW 7.Too-tight tennis shoes – GW 8.Large bottle with small amount of concentrated cleaner – dilute and change to small spray bottle, toss large one 9.Green plant containers – recycle center 10.Stash of glycerin soaps(leftovers from gifts) – move to the bathroom to start using.
The yearbook and camera would probably sell on ebay. The road atlas? I’d tear out the local pages or maps of where you’ve been for scrapbooking – then toss the rest 🙂
This week I am cleaning out an electrical/plumbing drawer full of junk. Stuff not used for remodeling. Giving it to the Habitat store – there will be over 10 items there – light fixtures and wall switches to start with.
I’m catching up for 2 weeks, so here are my 20 items: 1. sandals (ruined) – trash 2. too-high heels – ebay 3. makeup bag – ebay 4. potato masher – GW 5. computer monitor – CL 6. bra (never worn) – returned to Macys 7. capris (never worn) – returned to Macys 8. Lot of beauty items – ebay 9. lot of books – ebay 10. lot of weight watchers items – ebay 11. Coach CD case – ebay 12. lot of Franklin Covey stuff – ebay 13. oscillating fan – CL 14. jeans – ebay 15. gossip bench – CL 16. new welcome mat – GW 17 & 18. stuffed animals from childhood – giving to a friends kid (I think, if not, GW) 19. plastic shopping bags that I cannot use for trash – taking to local grocery store for recycling and 20. flower pot lot – CL.
I love this idea. I am down to the harder decisions after 2 years of decluttering. Today is cool and rainy so a great day to go find 10 things and disperse. Clothing to Goodwill will be counted as one. I’m looking forward to reading this post each week and the readers posts as well. back later to post my success.
Yeah, it was easy.
1 bag og clothes to GW,
2 sm bag of hair clasps to GW,
3,4,5 belgin waffle iron, glass jar wine bottle stopper to GW,
6 plastic box that my watch came in to trash,
7 glass and metal wind chime to GW
8 Columbia river sandals to GW
9 brass curtain rod to GW
10 older air pump for bike to GW
I am driving there in a few minutes. I haven’t even touched the garage or basement. This is great.
Cleaning out the freezer today – I’ll just let that count for this weeks’ 10.
Dispersing amongst family and friends –
a mince meat pie, several containers of chicken broth and beef broth, more liver than I can eat,
and canning up the pork roast, and the elk roast is going into the crock pot for a family dinner tonight. Oh, and 3 slices of dead bread- whatever possessed me to put that in there, I don’t know 🙁
I really need to join this as well. I have hundreds of stuff to get rid off (*cough* almost 1500 magazines) and some other bits & bob. I just got rid of some clothes that I haven’t worn in a while a week ago, they went to Vinnies (St Vincent De Paul) and the really old ones went to the bin. I’m doing this challenge on the weekend and will post back a link.
Marci, the freezer definitely counts as 10!
Miss M – let us know your progress 🙂
I did my 100 hundred items for last week (like I said, I have a lot of stuff to get rid of). Putting the items to get rid of in bags and boxes wasn’t hard. What was hard was actually taking the bags/boxes out of my house and to Goodwill.
I am working on my next 100!
100, wow! That’s great!
sell the camera to adorama, or keh. May not get as much(but may get more) than ebay, but you can also take the money you earn and apply it to credit at the store (if you still shoot, that could mean prints, memory cards, tv’s, etc)
