HEY! Love the article! I just made the jump, and it's funny you just stated in the beginning of the article that you tried for a long time to resist haha! As did I. Here's my style for using Google, hopefully you find use of it:

I use gmail integrated with my ipod touch via gesture controls. I have a jailbroken iPod Touch and this is how I do it (all google services):

hold status bar for docs
swipe status bar left for calendar
swipe status bar right for my tasks (in which I keep all my lists [notes/bible study/health notes such as blood pressure readings for each week all dated/wishlists of books/music/movies/games/car maintenance/freewriting on the go jots/grocery lists/birthday gift wishes/work notes/and way more])
I hold the home button and bring up all my google bookmarks to access my favorite sites/links without having to type
I put my google reader integrated with Pulse News app for ipod touch making it more beautiful to look at
I have an app for my google photos via picasa
google books are on my homescreen next to my ibooks/readitlater/bible/posterous blogs

anyways, I LOVE GOOGLE TOO! Sorry to ramble, but hopefully you will find some use in this especially in the way that I use tasks. I find swipe controls amazing so that it's less apps to open and easier to remember to update my calendar/tasks since I'm naturally bad with that.

I had a bad experience with a Viao loaded with Windows Vista Home Ultimate. Need I say more? Total "crash and burn". Now I use Google: docs, calander, gmail, blogger and picasa. I love it; it has simplified my life. No, I don't put account numbers, SSN and that type of stuff but all the other things (which is a lot) that I/we/all of us do on computer interfaces is where I can reach it anytime, from anywhere. Icing on the cake: micro.soft aint jamming their garbage down my throat. Awesome! Dude!

I use all the Google services mentioned in the article; additionally, as a teacher I use Google Sites and Blogger as the web platform for all of my college courses. I upload or create text files directly to the sites, and link image and presentation files from Google Docs.

One caveat, as mentioned by another commenter: Google is unreachable and completely unresponsive to any form of help request. They create a service and offer it as is, with whatever help or information you can find on user forums. This policy makes Google appear somewhat imperious, even arrogant, but since most of the services (with the exception of Google Voice, which we can't get in Canada) work so well from the get-go, the trade-off is worth it.

I have drunk the Gool-Aid, and it is good.

Really, though, there is no help from any email/online provider. If you use a Comcast address, they will cancel it. But if you use any large free email service, good luck getting help. I imagine Yahoo is the same as Gmail, etc.

Sorry that happened to you, that stinks.

I stopped using Gmail for awhile after I found out someone was trying to steal my identity, and had set up a Gmail account with my name as a way to facilitate their online purchases.

My bank and all the companies that were involved during this period were very considerate, and worked hard at getting everything sorted out. However, Google was useless. There isn't any customer service for Gmail. There's an extensive help file system, which didn't address my problem in any way, and there's a bulletin board where other users will post instructions on how to do things. However, there is NO way to contact a real employee to get real help.

I ended up talking with a good friend of mine, who happens to work at Google, and he actually went to his boss, and there was nothing that could be done. Google wouldn't shut down the email address that the crooks were using, because it was "your word against theirs". Nevermind that it was also my bank's word and the word of several companies against theirs, too.

If you want to use Google for everything, and I've gone back to using it for most email, that's fine, but just be aware that there is NO help. There is no way to contact an employee, there is no customer service or support. If you lose a a few hundred email messages, as has happened according to people on the Gmail bulletin board, there isn't anything you can do. You're just out. So be sure to back everything up, don't just trust that Google will take care of everything.

I really enjoy using Google for a lot of things, but after my experience, I back everything up and make sure that all my email is stored in two places.

Question: How do your Google contacts and Evernote work together? What are your thoughts re: Evernote as contacts manager?
Thanks~CVH

Good info, thank you. I've been using Yahoo mail for business and my blogs...along with Comcast for personal and I have an email through my college that I've synched to forward into my Comcast box. If I could somehow combine all of these to check them daily in one place that would be great.
