Another idea is also to start small, but in a different way. Choose one small area. One shelf, your coffee table, dining table, a portion of your desk, a corner of the room, something like that. If something seems overwhelming, break it into smaller peices. Instead of doing your closet, do the floor of it, or one shelf of your desk or bookshelf. Clear off anything that doesn't belong there and organize the rest (easier said than done, but not too difficult because it is such a small space). Then keep it that way. At the end of each day, or even a few times a day, clear any accumulated clutter off of this one spot. Then in a couple days or a week, do this with another area, keeping them both clean. This both breaks down the cleaning process into manageable steps and gives you constant visual gratification of your efforts.

This will get more difficult the longer you go, not just because you have more areas to keep neat, but because you will find that your clutter is being concentrated into smaller areas. If you can no longer store 'homeless items' on your desk, coffee table, or bookshelf, you are forced to make a real place for them. However, you will have built up a positive momentum making it easier to make larger changes of purging and organizing, and you will have a better idea of what sorts of clutter are your biggest problems.
