Time is also for me precious and yet most of my life I have treated it with disrespect or negligence. Despite the content of my previous post, with its reference to remuneration, I realise now that thinking about time in terms of monetary value doesn't ring true for me. Its more about its relationship to peace and joy (or the lack there of). The experiences, services or goods that my salary buys cannot compensate me for the missed hours. This year I will become 47 years old - the same age as my mother when she died of cancer. She always dreamed of 'later' when she would 'have time to......'. I guess I have decided not to wait until later.

No way, I'd never make it. I do enjoy spending time alone but that seems a little too isolated.

Another way off assessing value is time.

Time is my best way of analyzing value as I see time as being the most valuable thing. Sometimes it is better to say no to someone or pay for a service (even one that you can do yourself) if it would take you more time to complete then you value your time at.

Therefore, if you were to give your time a financial value per hour you could easily assess the cost to time ratio of a service. If it will take you 2 hours to paint a wall but cost $20 to have it painted then you would employ the contractor if you value 2 hours of your time more than $20. This will obviously depend on your personal situations and on;y apply to certain events.

One definition of value is a fair return or equivalent in goods, services, or money for something exchanged. This week I decided that the money that I receive for the services I provide in my salaried job is not equivalent to the time, energy, fear, frustration and mismatch in personal values that it "costs" me. In some ways this is a relief to me but I find it difficult to make such a choice because of the effect on my family. I have to believe that the patience that I may regain for my children en the intimacy and support that I hope my husband will receive is a a fair exchange for the things that they will have to compromise on. Lets assume I'm worth it :-)

Hear Hear!!
All this information sharing has been on my mind loads recently. I'm increasingly feeling more and more uncomfortable with the way our society communicates with eachother. Do we have to share everything!? Are we even listening to eachother?
We try and have alternate days as screen free. We're failing at the moment and i'm missing those screen free times.

I really enjoyed this video! In general, I love seeing people mature as humans and as men/women, especially as they draw from their own life experience. This "yes virus" also applies to money. I got a call from Christian Children's Fund a while ago asking if I was able to sponsor another child. The caller had a very effective and convincing "sales" pitch while telling me about the little boy at the top of their list. I explained to the caller--very respectfully and politely--that in addition to the one child I already sponsored through CCF, I had two more in other organizations and at the current time was not able to take on another. She thanked me for everything I had been doing already, and it turned out to be the most pleasant "spam" call I have ever received. It was very difficult to say no to her and to this little boy, but I really believe you MUST draw the line between providing for others and taking care of yourself. This line is different for everyone, and finding it and living it is an important part of becoming human.

This is funny...I was just saying that exact same sentiment this morning.
I told the kids that there was to be no tv, ipod, laptop, etc. this evening when we all get home.
It is way too easy for us all to get sucked in to these things and forget about everything else.
I like to put on some music in the background & get to work! We have many projects & chores that need catching up on due to a busy schedule and it just seems that we don't make any headway if we don't shut down the technology.

A few years ago I even did away with the cable over the spring & summer. It saved us a lot of money, and kept us from wasting time. I just can't stay focused with that thing on all the time.

Well 10 of those aren't even allowed in my home.... so that is a good head start :) lol !
But to me, books and my e-reader for the large print font I need now, are relaxing and only for pleasure :) .... So that leaves 4 things to whittle out.... lol...

Definitely take major breaks -- hours at a time is great :) Enjoy the real life :)

I know you're right, and I think it all the time. I'm hard-wired. As Kurzweil says, Singularity is dangerously near. Thank you for reminding me to live.
